But the feel is much more aligned with what people normally associate the Beehive State with. Logan’s Dilemma: Suburban Life Or Rural Life?
It’s hard to imagine a city of some 51,542 residents being classified as rural. Technically, it isn’t. But it can seem that way. And despite its proximity to the mountains, Logan can get some heavy snowfall. To experience less snow fall you’d probably have to go to Ogden city over 30 miles away!
With that in mind, summers in Logan are relatively mild for a state like Utah with temperatures rarely peaking above the high 80s. If you’re accustomed to cooler climates, summers in Utah as a whole can be a bit of a shock. But from our experience, it seems like most newcomers learn to adapt fairly quickly.

Like we said, agriculture is a big industry in Logan. It’s been a mainstay since the city was first founded back in the 1850s, with close to forty percent of Logan residents working in some form of agricultural concern. But Logan’s about a lot more than farmland. For several decades, the city has maintained a thriving arts community thanks to the presence of the Utah Festival Opera, the Cache Valley Center for the Arts and the Ellen Eccles Theater. In fact, Logan’s unofficial nickname is “Utah’s Heart of the Arts”—a somehow fitting moniker for a city that maintains both a sense of rugged wilderness and small town charm.
The unemployment rate that’s affected both Utah and the rest of the country hasn’t hit Logan quite so dramatically yet. It’s still uncomfortably high, with recent estimates indicating rates of six percent; a 200 percent increase since March 2020. But Logan’s a fairly resilient city. It has to be. It’s in the very life’s blood of the Cache Valley. And for the past six months, manufacturing, government and the educational sector has remained at an even keel in comparison to other industries in the city; a reassuring sign of Logan’s economic stability indeed.
Education In Logan
For many Northern Utah residents, the only thing possibly as synonymous with Logan as agriculture is Utah State University.
As Utah’s largest public residential campus, USU enjoys a certain esteem as one of the more affordable and comprehensive research institutions in all of the Rockies. But for students looking for more specialized industry-based certification, Stevens-Henager College is rapidly becoming a dominant force in healthcare, business management and technology programs in the Rockies while Bridgerland Technical College provides a wide variety of continuing education programs in a wide selection of certified disciplines.
Logan High School is currently ranked #32 out of 161 schools in the state in terms of college readiness. But what about the Logan Public School District as a whole? Despite a participation rate in excess of 95 percent, the Logan School District is in need of development in a few particular areas. But for the most part, it’s performance is on par with other Utah schools. And virtually none of the families we’ve spoken to have raised any complaints. On the contrary, they’ve stated that the district’s performance has actually exceeded their expectations.
Is Logan Safe?
Logan currently has a national crime rate index of 32. And that might seem like a cause for concern. But here’s the reality. Logan has an estimated 19 crimes committed for every thousand residents—and very few of them can be classified as violent crimes. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a threat of crime in Logan. No community is immune to increasing crime rates, be it in Utah or any other state in the country. But you have a 1 percent chance in 727 to fall victim to a violent crime in Logan. In the rest of Utah, it’s about 1 in 429. And Utah’s considered a state with one of the lowest crime rates in the country. In fact, it even edged out the likes of Hawaii, Montana and Alaska in a recent report.

Housing in Utah is considered one of the hottest markets for real estate right now with a median home value of $355,484. But the median home value in Logan is considerably less.
