Why Saint George, Utah?

One of the key elements of St. George’s charm is that it seems to be an exercise in contradictions. It was the fastest growing metropolitan area in the country in 2018, according to US Census data. And yet development hasn’t hindered the pristine beauty of the nearby Mojave Desert or the Pine Valley Mountains. It enjoyed a 3.5 percent population growth between 2017 and 2018 and yet it’s never lost its fundamental identity. In fact, it’s consistently ranked as one of the most secure cities in the U.S. to live in—by none other than the insurance industry!

And it’s affordable. In 2019, the cost of living index for St. George was reportedly 88.7; well below the Utah average of 97 and far below the national average of 100.

Job Opportunities In Saint George

Unfortunately, the unemployment rate in St. George isn’t substantially lower than the rest of Utah. As of March 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics placed unemployment claims in the city at 3.3 percent; hardly a dramatic difference from the state findings of 3.6 percent, but still thankfully lower than the national average of 4.4 percent.

But much like the rest of Utah, job opportunities are still plentiful in St. George. Transportation, trade and utilities currently make up 16.1 percent of the labor pool, followed by education and healthcare at 10.5 percent and local government at 9.9 percent.

Location, Location, Location?

One of the keys to understanding St George’s unique place in Utah’s culture is its proximity to two large metropolitan cities in the west—Salt Lake City, UT and Las Vegas, NV. With Las Vegas 90 minutes away and Salt Lake City 4 hours away with no stops, St George is ideally located for many Northern Utah residents. Even Phoenix, AZ is only 6 and a half hours away from Southern Utah. Add in that it rarely freezes in the area, and you have a place that draws a lot of people. But that relative proximity can come with a price.

Utah is one of the safest states in the country, with an estimated crime rate of approximately 172 crimes for every 100,000 residents. St. George doesn’t differ very much at all. In fact, it’s considered to be safer than 33 percent of other U.S. cities with a comparable population with only 2 violent crimes committed in 2016 for every 1,000 residents. But while St. George’s Crime Rate Index is still lower than the rest of the nation, it’s increased in recent years by over 15 percent according to some estimates. And while we don’t mean to disparage the other cities, Phoenix reported some 6.2 homicides for every 100,000 residents in 2019 while Las Vegas faced a staggering amount of over 600 violent crimes for the same amount of residents in 2018 alone.

Retirement In St. George

While the median age of residents was reportedly 36 in 2017, that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the most premier retirement destinations—not just in Utah, but in the entire country. There’s over 12 different retirement communities in St. George; no small feet for a city of less than 88,000 residents! But it’s not just the warm climate which averages approximately 255 sunny days out of the year that draws active adults over the age of 55 to this city. It’s the activities. This city is home to over a dozen golf courses (ten of which are considered to be at pro level,) as well as plentiful restaurants, parking and best of all—serenity. And nearby Snow Canyon State Park offers incredible hiking and outdoor adventure.

Saint George Houses For Rent
