Home Improvement #1. Clean The Exterior of Your House
When home buyers are searching for a home, those buyers want one that will be easy and carefree to look after, and one that is ready for them to move into with the confidence that the previous homeowner took care of the home.
One way to indicate that is by giving plenty of extra attention to the exterior of your home by cleaning it up…especially the front yard and front of the house. First impressions you know.
Power wash the walls, touch up the paint, patch the stucco, weed the path, mow the lawn, wash the windows, replace the missing downspout. These might seem like small actions but they can have a bit effect.
Home Improvement #2. Landscaping
Next, think about landscaping. We mentioned landscaping a little in Home Improvement #1. You don’t have to be extravagant but put in some time to make your home’s exterior look really good.
Till the soil in the garden and plant flowers or vegetables, put bark around each tree, spray a weed killer and fertilizer to encourage grass growth. IMPORTANT, keep the grass watered and mowed. Buyers do not want to see a yard that looks like it will take a ton of work to get back into shape.
Maybe plant a bush or two. Again, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a big impact.
Home Improvement #3. Paint
If the paint in any of your rooms is a dark shade, such as eggplant, red or emerald, cover it up with a coat of light or neutral paint. Buyers find it easier to see themselves living in a home with neutral walls—plus, they’ll make your home seem larger, cleaner, and far more appealing. Let the new owners decide on a color other than a neutral color.
If you still can’t bring yourself to paint over the hues you’ve so carefully selected, consider this: After living in a home for a few years you may become a bit blind to how your walls are showing to newcomers. Peeling paint, dirt, fingerprints, and dings seem to go unnoticed in a lived-in home. Fresh paint on the walls in a neutral color is always best, but if your budget does not permit that, washing the walls and doors goes a long way.
Home Improvement #4. New Floor Coverings
Nothing turns off a potential buyer then old dirty carpet. To get the best price possible, it is worthwhile to invest in new carpet or laminate wood floors. Even the least expensive carpet or wood floors will dramatically increase how a buyer feels about your house.
The summer is a pretty good time to sell a house but you can still help to speed up the process a bit by making these 4 home improvements to make before selling this summer. You’ll be glad you did! Here are 5 more tips on selling your house this summer.
